چکیده

The effects of freeze/thaw (F/T) cycling on the structure of dry Nafion® membranes were investigated using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). The method correlates the lifetime and relative intensity of positrons (anti-electrons) annihilating in the open-volume voids of the membrane with void size and void volume fraction. The results, though still preliminary, show freeze/thaw-induced collapse vailable online 5 February 2009

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in nickel ferrite and iron oxide nanopowders

In this study, a positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer was set up and its resolution was optimized. The spectrometer is a fast-slow arrangement with time resolution of 250 ps. To obtain lifetime components and their intensities from analyzing positron annihilation lifetime spectrum, the Pascual software is used. Positrons are from a source of radioactive 22NaCl with 20 μCi activity enclos...

Probing Pore Characteristics in Low-K Thin Films Using Positronium Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy

Depth profiled positronium annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been used to probe the pore characteristics (size, distribution, and interconnectivity) in thin, porous films, including silica and organic-based films. The technique is sensitive to all pores (both interconnected and closed) in the size range from 0.3 nm to 300 nm, even in films buried under a diffusion barrier. PALS may ...

Detection of Atomic Scale Changes in the Free Volume Void Size of Three-Dimensional Colorectal Cancer Cell Culture Using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) provides a direct measurement of the free volume void sizes in polymers and biological systems. This free volume is critical in explaining and understanding physical and mechanical properties of polymers. Moreover, PALS has been recently proposed as a potential tool in detecting cancer at early stages, probing the differences in the subnanomete...

Study the Properties of Cu-Zn Ferrite Substituted with Rare Earth Ions by Using Positron Annihilation Analysis

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is a direct probe of size and concentration of nano-scale defects in materials, because it is very sensitive to electron density. The lifetime of positron ( ) and its intensity (I) can be used to characterize the defects concentration. In the present work, PALS has been applied to measure the variation of positron lifetime parameters for polycr...

Future directions of positron annihilation spectroscopy in low-k dielectric films

Positronium Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) has become recognized in the microelectronics industry as one of only several methods capable of quantitatively characterizing engineered nanopores in next-generation (k < 2.2) interlayer dielectric (ILD) thin films. Successes and shortcomings of PALS to date will be assessed and compared with other methods of porosimetry such as ellipsometr...
